Life Only Seems Unfair

When You Don't Know the Rules

If we accept that we live in a loving universe—and that the universe doesn’t make mistakes—then a natural question follows:
Why would such a universe allow pain?

Why would it require some of the experiences we’ve had?

Why do we have to suffer?

Suffering isn't random

It doesn’t exist to punish or shame. It exists to teach — to guide us toward truths we might otherwise overlook, or....be reluctant to face.

When life feels hard or unfair, it’s often because we haven’t yet learned the subtle rules that govern cause and effect, growth, and adaptation. These rules — the principles of natural law — are always at work, even when we can’t see them.

Once we begin to notice them, life stops feeling arbitrary. Suffering becomes intelligible. It points toward change, clarity, and opportunity, rather than mere hardship.

Natural Law

Most of us were never taught the rules of natural law — not explicitly, anyway.

We were taught rules of behavior.
Rules of society.
Rules of achievement.

But natural law is different.

Natural law governs:

  • cause and effect

  • adaptation and resistance

  • coherence and fragmentation

  • how suffering arises — and how it resolves

When we don’t understand these laws, life feels random. Personal. Targeted.

“Why is this happening to me?”

But when we begin to see the laws at work, something shifts.

Not because suffering disappears —
but because the reason for suffering starts to make sense.

Noteworthy...

Following natural law doesn’t mean you suffer less immediately.
It means you understand what suffering is asking of you.

And once you understand that, suffering no longer has to be prolonged.

Pain has momentum when its message is ignored.
It shortens when it’s understood.

What’s fascinating is that hints of natural law are everywhere.

They’re woven into:

  • biblical teachings (“As you sow, so shall you reap,” "You have not because you ask not")

  • the laws of the land (cause, consequence, responsibility)

  • Stoic philosophy (focus on what you can govern; release what you can’t)

  • even suffering itself, which always points toward a necessary change

Different languages.

Same underlying principles.

Natural law doesn’t punish.
It instructs.

It doesn’t moralize.
It reveals.

The Truth

Suffering often appears when we’re:

  • resisting a truth

  • clinging to an identity that no longer fits

  • repeating a strategy that once worked but no longer does

From the outside, that can look unfair.

From the inside — once seen clearly — it looks precise.

Almost merciful.

This doesn’t mean:

  • “you caused everything bad that happened”

  • “you should be grateful for pain”

  • “just think differently and it will go away”

It means something quieter and more empowering:

You are not being singled out.
You are being invited into understanding. And maybe even a greater version of yourself.

And that changes what comes next.

When life feels unfair, it’s often not because the rules are cruel.

It’s because they haven’t been explained yet.

Once they are, you don’t just endure life differently —
you participate in it differently. You have a different level of engagement.

And that’s where suffering stops being endless…
and starts becoming instructive.

Until next week,
Patricia
